Chicken and Waffles 9/2/10

No, you’re not in the ATL and I’m not Gladys Knight. This is Chicken and Waffles, the weekly rambling of various off-road and moto news… It’s also probably a perfectly good excuse to waste some time, right? Let’s face it, you’re on the internet and outside of refreshing your Facebook page every 30 seconds, you don’t have anything better to do. So let’s get to it.

The time is nearing. We’re now less than two weeks away from the return of the GNCC Series from the summer break. The speculations are starting to begin and the big question on everyone’s mind is, can anyone run down Josh Strang in the points? Well, if Josh finds that stride he had in the early part of the year, then the answer to that question will be a giant negative. However, Charlie Mullins still has a shot at it and of course there’s always a challenge from the other top guys.

How about the Unadilla race itself? Well it’s no secret that Nathan Kanney is always a favorite at Unadilla, and he won Snowshoe before the series went on summer break, so he’s definitely going to be one to keep an eye on. Paul Whibley is still hunting for his first win in 2010 and he won Unadilla last year, can he break his bad luck streak in 2010? What about points leader Josh Strang? After a tough ride at Snowshoe, and now a challenge for the title in the form of Charlie Mullins, he’s got to be hungry for the win.

Truth is, we won’t know exactly what is going to happen until the end of the day on September 12th. No matter what though, you can be sure that it’s going to be a good race.

Now before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s check in and see what happened last weekend in the off-road world.

Last Friday night saw the extreme action of the Endurocross in Indy. The Offroad Junkies crew (minus myself) was in attendance, so if you want some cool video coverage, head on over and check it out. As for the race itself, it was Taddy Blazusiak once again taking the win over second place rider Kyle Redmond and Kevin Rookstool in third.

The OMA Series was also in action in Indiana. When it was over, Paul Whibley took the overall win in front of Thad Duvall and Jordan Ashburn. Could Whibley be finding his groove on the Yamaha? Maybe he is, and maybe he’ll grab a win at Unadilla. Again, we’ll just have to wait and see.

This week I spent a day out at the JGR MX Test Track as GNCC Womens class rider Shelby Rolen got her suspension dialed in for her WMA Pro debut this weekend at Steel City in Pennsylvania. She was there with her trainer, Loretta Lynn’s MX legend Kevin Walker. Also in attendance were JGR team rider Justin Brayton and Honda of Troy’s Les Smith. They were all laying down some killer laps and I also had the opportunity to see how supportive the folks at JGR are. To read more about the day, check out the story at https://jaredbolton.com/2010/08/31/ride-report-jgr-mx/ and while you’re make sure to visit the iPhoto Gallery for some cool shots from the day. Also, I threw together a little video of the day, which you can see at https://jaredbolton.com/2010/09/01/jgr-test-track-video/

Looking towards this weekend and what is there to do? Well, a lot of the riders in the southeast will be heading to the first SETRA Enduro of the year. It’s the legendary Little Brown Jug Enduro in South Carolina. This is one of the oldest enduro events in the country and will draw over 400 riders on average. There’s also a $2000 purse this year, so I would expect a pretty good turnout of Pro riders as well!

That’s all I’ve got for this week. Since we’re creeping closer and closer to Unadilla, I would expect all sorts of rumors, theories and smack talk to be brewing over the next week. Until then, keep it dirty my friends.
